How Startup Founders Should Harness AI
Be open about how you use AI. Share the tools with your team so everyone benefits and grows together.

It’s no secret that everyone is using AI these days. Naturally, the founders of tech startups are among the folks leading the charge. After all, they understand new technologies better than the average person, so they have no problem using AI to write policies, presentations, and other documents.
However, that doesn’t mean founders should be the only ones at the startup using AI. There can be a backlash within a startup if the founder is secretive about how they’re using AI or making this technology too founder-focused. Employees could start to feel like the founder is using AI to perform tasks they were hired to do.
That’s not to say founders should ignore AI. The key is to learn how to use these tools and then share that knowledge with your team. Don’t be the only one using AI and then share the outputs. Be transparent with your employees and share the tools that you’re using because they’ll be able to use them too.
By teaching your employees to harness the power of AI, you can make everyone at the company more productive. You also won’t risk people feeling left out or worried that their position will be replaced by AI. Eventually, you may not need to hire as many employees. But in the meantime, the goal should be to make everyone more effective at their job.
Moving forward, startups should provide AI tools, security, and direction for employees. Teach them how to maximize their efficiency with this new technology. That way, there is full transparency with how AI is being used. More importantly, the entire company can feel the impact, because it’s still about the team working together as a team rather than a founder-focused approach to AI.
The Midstage Institute is also using AI in ways that can help startups. With the AI-powered Strategy Canvas, AI prompts will help you develop a clear strategy to turn your vision into better team alignment and execution.
